In a press release issued on 4/1/2014, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the NJ State Attorney General’s office announced that they have issued $5K grants to 60 police departments throughout New Jersey to crackdown on motorists talking and texting on their mobile phones via new program entitled “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” The program begins immediately and runs through April 21.

The NJ State Attorney General estimates that Driver inattention has been a major contributing factor in nearly 750,000 motor vehicle crashes in the state since 2009 and nationwide, 3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2012 alone.

The following law enforcement organizations in Somerset County have received grants, and other agencies are expected to participate unfunded:

  • Bernards Twp PD
  • Bernardsville PD
  • Branchburg
  • Bridgewater PD
  • Franklin Twp PD
  • Hillsborough PD
  • Montgomery Twp PD
  • North Plainfield PD
  • Somerset County Sheriff’s Office
  • Warren Twp PD

It is illegal in New Jersey to operate a motor vehicle while using a handheld electronic device. Fines start at $100 but will increase this summer and can ultimately result in charges of vehicular homicide of assault if an accident occurs.
